Local Information for
Frisco, Colorado
Incorporated in 1879, Frisco got its name when a miner scrawled “Frisco City” (from the name of another gold rush town - San Francisco) above the door of settler Henry Recen’s cabin. Back in that day, the surrounding mountains were scoured for gold and silver by miners from far and wide.
Today, the town’s quaint Main Street still retains the flavor of the Old West. But with a location in the heart of Summit County, just off of Interstate 70 and minutes away from the county’s four renowned ski areas, Frisco is a lively town that has flourished as a year-round destination.
Known for being a bit less hurried, Frisco is a family-oriented town that offers affordable and diverse lodging, shopping and dining.
Tucked against Mount Royal and the Ten Mile Range, with Lake Dillon at its border, there is plenty to do outdoors. In the winter, Frisco is known for great Nordic skiing, backcountry trails for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, or dinner sleigh rides. In the summer, the Frisco Peninsula draws bikers, frisbee golfers, softball games and hikers. The Frisco Bay Marina, also known as “the quiet side of Lake Dillon,” offers boat and kayak rentals for scenic trips around the lake.
Frisco also hosts some of the county’s most popular community events. Main Street comes alive in summer with Music on Main Street, the world’s highest BBQ Challenge and Frisco Founder’s Days. The Fourth of July Fireworks over Lake Dillon is one of the state’s best fireworks displays. Another popular summer event is “Vettes on the Rockies” when over 500 Corvettes and their owners from all over the West congregate on Main Street in August to celebrate one of America’s most famous cars. Wintertime events include the Frisco Gold Rush, the state's oldest citizens' cross-country ski race.
At any time of year, you can explore Frisco’s history at the Frisco Schoolhouse Museum on Main Street. And the adjacent Frisco Historic Park includes the town’s original 1881 jail, a log chapel, a recreated trappers cabin and nine other historic buildings.
Centrally located Frisco is a great place to stay if you are planning to take advantage of the many different winter and summer activities available throughout the county.
